Choosing jewellery as a gift

Jewellery makes a good gift when it fits and suits the person. Size is the hard part, so it helps to start with pieces that do not need one.

When you do not know their size

  • A necklace is the safest choice. 45 cm suits most women and 50 to 55 cm most men; a chain with an extender can be worn at two lengths.
  • Earrings need no size. Check that their ears are pierced, and whether they wear hoops or studs.
  • An open ring adjusts to the finger.
  • A cord bracelet adjusts to the wrist.

Finding a ring size without asking

Borrow a ring they wear on the right finger and measure straight across the inside, from edge to edge, in millimetres. Multiply by 3.14 for our size, or look the diameter up in our size guide. Note which hand it came from: fingers on the hand they write with are often slightly larger. Between two sizes, take the larger.

A piece with a story

Many of our pieces carry an old symbol, and its story can be part of the gift.

  • The Vegvísir, an Icelandic sign worn today for finding your way: for a journey or a new start.
  • Mjölnir, Thor’s hammer, worn in the Viking Age, most likely for protection.
  • Celtic knots, drawn as lines with no beginning and no end.
  • A rune for the first letter of their name.

Timing and returns

Delivery takes 5–12 days to most parts of the world, and remote areas may take longer, so order two weeks ahead. If you order several pieces, they may arrive on different days.

If the gift is not right, it can be sent back within 30 days of delivery for a full refund; return postage is paid by you. Earrings can be returned only while their packaging is still sealed. Returns explains how.
