Details
Axes were everyday tools in the Viking Age and common weapons too. Archaeologists note that less wealthy fighters took woodworking axes into battle, while broad axes like the one buried at Langeid in Norway in the early 11th century were made for war alone. The silver-inlaid axe from a grave at Mammen in Denmark carries a tree and a bird that can be read either as Christian or as pagan symbols.
