Details
The magnetic compass is a real tool rather than a myth. Chinese writers described magnetised needles by 1088, and a text of about 1111 to 1117 tells of sailors watching the south-pointing needle in dark weather. In Europe, Alexander Neckam described sailors using a compass around 1190. As jewellery, the compass is a modern emblem of finding one’s way and of travel.
