Details
In ancient Greece the owl was the sacred bird of Athena, goddess of wisdom and good counsel, crafts and the defence of cities, and patron of Athens. From the 5th century BC the silver coins of Athens showed Athena’s head on one side and her owl, an olive sprig and the letters ฮฮฮ, for Athens, on the other. These coins were among the most widely traded of the ancient world.
