Details

The serpent biting its own tail is first known from ancient Egypt: two such serpents encircle a figure in the Enigmatic Book of the Netherworld, from the tomb of Tutankhamun in the 14th century BC. In Egyptian thought it stood for the formless chaos surrounding the ordered world. Greek alchemists in Roman Egypt drew it around the words ‘the all is one’, and later writers made it a sign of eternity.
