Details
In Chinese thought, yin and yang were the two complementary forces present in all things: yin linked with earth, the feminine, darkness and passivity, and yang with heaven, the masculine, light and activity. The idea is ancient, but the swirling black-and-white circle is much later. Diagrams of the ‘supreme ultimate’ appeared under the Song dynasty in the 11th century, and the swirl with its two dots took shape in the Ming period.
