Details
Belief in the evil eye, a harmful glance thought to be cast through envy, is old and widespread: the Greeks and Romans knew it, as did Jewish, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist communities. In Turkish and Greek folk tradition the nazar, a blue glass bead shaped like an eye, was meant to catch that first envious look and draw it away. Families pinned one to a baby’s clothes and hung others in homes, shops and cars.
