Details

The triple spiral is far older than the Celts. A famous example is carved inside the passage tomb at Newgrange in Ireland, built around 3200 BC, about 2,500 years before Celtic culture reached Ireland, and its meaning is unknown. Spiral triskeles later decorated Iron Age La Tène Celtic art, while the ancient Greeks used a three-legged version, a form also seen on the flag of the Isle of Man.
