Details
In European folk tradition, an iron horseshoe nailed above a door was believed to keep out evil spirits, and later to bring good luck. Cold iron was widely thought to repel fairies, witches and ghosts. A legend tells how St Dunstan, a blacksmith who became Archbishop of Canterbury, nailed a shoe to the Devil’s hoof and freed him only when he promised never to enter a place with a horseshoe over the door.
