Details
The cross is the central symbol of Christianity, recalling the crucifixion of Jesus. For the first centuries Christians rarely depicted it. Images of the cross became more common from the late 4th century, when it was understood above all as a sign of victory over death, and the first public image of Christ on the cross appeared around 425 on a door panel at Santa Sabina in Rome. Today many Christians wear a cross or crucifix.
