Details
In the Poetic Edda, the ægishjálmr or ‘helm of terror’ was worn by Fáfnir, and every living creature was afraid of it. The stave now sold under that name comes much later, from Icelandic books of magic written between roughly the late 1500s and 1670. Their instructions say it was to be made in lead and pressed on the forehead when expecting enemies, with the promise that they would be overcome.
