Wolves loom large in European myth. In Norse poems Odin kept two wolves, Geri and Freki, to whom he gave all the food set before him, and the monstrous wolf Fenrir was fated to swallow the god at Ragnarök. Roman legend told that a she-wolf kept alive the twins Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome, after their great-uncle tried to have them drowned in the Tiber; a famous bronze shows her nursing them.
