Details
Snakes have carried many meanings. The Greeks gave a single snake coiled on a staff to Asclepius, god of medicine, and in late antiquity a snake biting its own tail stood for eternity. In early Victorian Britain that tail-biting snake appeared in love tokens and mourning jewellery as a sign of eternity, and Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a serpent engagement ring set with an emerald.
