Details
The Saint Benedict medal shows Saint Benedict holding a cross and the book of his monastic Rule. The letters on it stand for Latin prayers, among them ‘May the holy cross be my light’ and ‘Begone, Satan’. A manuscript of 1415 explaining the letters was found at Metten Abbey in Bavaria in 1647, and the best-known design was struck at Montecassino in 1880. Catholics regard it as a prayer, not a charm.
