Details

Runes were the letters of the early Germanic peoples. The Elder Futhark, 24 runes named after its first six letters, was in use from roughly the 2nd to the 8th century, and the oldest known inscription, on a comb from Vimose in Denmark, dates to about 160. People carved names, memorials and short messages. Using runes to tell fortunes is largely modern, popularised by Ralph Blum’s Book of Runes of 1982.
