Phoenix outline pendant

In Greek and Roman legend, the phoenix was a bird that lived for centuries and was reborn at the end of its life. In the 5th century BC Herodotus reported a tale, told at Heliopolis in Egypt, of it arriving every 500 years. Later writers of the Roman era told of it rising from a pyre or from flames, and Christians took it as a sign of resurrection. The Chinese fenghuang was a different bird, an omen of peace.
