Details
In Irish tradition, crosses of rushes or straw were woven on the eve of St Brigid’s Day, 1 February, which also marked Imbolc, an old festival of renewal. Families hung them over the doors of homes and farm buildings, above the fire or in the thatch, to welcome the saint and keep the household safe for the year ahead. Legend says Brigid first wove one while explaining the cross to a dying chieftain.
