Details
In Greek myth, Medusa was a Gorgon whose gaze turned people to stone. The hero Perseus cut off her head, avoiding her eyes by looking at her reflection in Athena’s polished shield, and the head was later set on the goddess’s aegis. Greeks used the gorgoneion, Medusa’s face, as a protective image, a frightening face to scare evil away. Early versions were monstrous, while from the 5th century BC artists made her beautiful.
