Details
Knotwork became a hallmark of Insular art in Ireland and Britain from the 7th century, in gospel books such as Durrow, Lindisfarne and Kells and on metalwork. It grew from plaited patterns in late Roman, Coptic and Germanic art; earlier Celtic art favoured spirals instead. Early sources do not explain what the patterns meant, and the knot-by-knot meanings offered today are not found in them.
