Details
In Chinese tradition the dragon, or long, was a generally kindly creature linked with water: farmers looked to dragons for life-giving rain, and dragon kings were said to rule the four seas. Carved jade dragons are known from the Hongshan culture of about 4500 to 3000 BC. In later imperial China the dragon became an emblem of the emperor, and Qing court robes with five-clawed dragons marked members of the imperial family.
