Details

The Claddagh ring, two hands holding a crowned heart, comes from Galway in the west of Ireland. The earliest rings in this style date to around 1700, and the design is often credited to the Galway goldsmith Richard Joyce. The hands are traditionally read as friendship, the heart as love and the crown as loyalty. Irish custom holds that the way it is worn shows whether the wearer is single, courting or married.

Metal and care

Stainless steel

Hard-wearing steel that resists tarnish and copes with water and sweat.

Rinse it in warm water with a drop of mild soap, dry it well and wipe it with a soft cloth.

Size guide

Ring sizes

Our ring sizes are EU sizes: the number is the inside circumference in millimetres. The table gives the UK and US equivalents and the inside diameter.

Find your size at home

  1. With a ring that fits: measure straight across the inside, edge to edge, and find that diameter in the table.
  2. Without a ring: wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps and measure the strip flat. That length in millimetres is your EU size.
  3. Measure at the end of the day and at room temperature: fingers are slightly larger in the evening and smaller in the cold.

Between two sizes, take the larger one. For wide bands of 6 mm or more, go one size up. If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, choose a size between the two measurements.
