Details

For early Christians the anchor was a sign of hope, drawing on the Letter to the Hebrews, which calls hope an anchor of the soul, sure and firm. Anchors were carved on Christian tombs in the catacombs of Rome from the end of the 1st century, with about seventy found in the cemetery of Priscilla alone. The upright anchor could also stand for a hidden cross, understood by Christians but not by outsiders.
