How to find your ring size at home

A thin polished band, a round signet ring and an open ankh ring, in stainless steel

A ring that fits slides over the knuckle with a little push and turns on the finger without falling off. You can find that size at home in a few minutes.

How our sizes work

Our ring sizes are EU sizes: the number is the inside circumference of the ring in millimetres. Size 57 measures 57 mm around the inside. The US size is given in brackets, so 57 is US 8.

Most of our rings come in sizes between 54 and 70 (US 7 and 13); some start at 47 (US 4) and some go up to 75 (US 15). The sizes of each ring are listed on its page, and our size guide has the full table with UK and US sizes.

With a ring that fits

This is the most reliable way. Take a ring that fits the finger you want to wear the new one on and measure straight across the inside, from edge to edge, in millimetres. Multiply by 3.14 for the EU size, or find the diameter in the size guide: 18.1 mm, for example, is size 57.

Without a ring

  1. Cut a strip of paper about 1 cm wide. Paper is better than string, which stretches.
  2. Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but not tight, and mark where it overlaps.
  3. Lay the strip flat and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. That number is your EU size.
  4. Check that a loop of that size passes over your knuckle.

When to measure

Fingers change size during the day. Measure in the evening, at room temperature: fingers are larger when they are warm and after exercise, and smaller in the cold. Measure the hand you will wear the ring on; the hand you write with is often slightly larger.

Between two sizes

  • Take the larger size.
  • For wide bands, 6 mm or more, go one size up: a wide band sits tighter than a thin one of the same size.
  • If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, choose a size between the two measurements.
